Yahoo!'s Picks of the Week

award3.gif (447 Byte)Prefer to conjure up the image of a time and place where things seemed a might slower? A time when folks sat around smelling the wisteria, sipping mint juleps, and watching the golden sun bob gently on the shimmering waves of the muddy Mississippi? Then mosey on down to the "Legend of Steamboatin'", a site dedicated to the grand tradition of those big boats that prowled the rivers of the South and Midwest. Steamboatin' contains a gallery of still active boats, including the Lady Luck, a full-scale replica of the original 1860's model, and the Delta Queen, the "last remaining historical steamboat available for overnight cruises". There's also a clickable map of a typical vessel (including smokestack, hull, and paddlewheel), and a little of the steamboat's early history, when it was the predominant means of transportation between faraway cities. Check out steamboatin', then y'all come back for the next pick, y'hear?

Westys Roadside Attractions

Westy's Roadside AttractionsFor a trip back in time, visit The Legend of Steamboating. Hosted by Franz Neumeier, who was born in Munich, Germany, this site beautifully conveys the romance of steamboating, which is still thriving on America's inland waterways. You can learn about the different parts of a steamboat, find out more about what boats are still plying the rivers, and even hear a steamboat whistle blow! This site is in both English and German.

The Legend of Steamboatin' the Grand Old South

award1.gif (3781 Byte)In past years, before super highways, jet planes and fast food, the Mississippi River was a major shipping channel for this country. It was as busy in it's heyday as the Hollywood Freeway is during rush hour today. To move all this freight, people, and the westward expansion of our country was the steamboat.
Today's site is a salute to those grand vessels, the river steamboats. There are very few original one left and even fewer in working order. But the site The Legends of Steamboatin' the Grand Old South salutes those that have gone before, are still here, and may be coming tomorrow. Here a visitor can take a cyber visit of a ship, learn about the history of them (including Sam Clemens), and visit an extensive photo gallery of ships and their crews. It brings back memories of times past, when life was more leisurely, not so fast paced, and if the job didn't get done today, well, there was always tomorrow.
So enjoy your stop here, have a mint julep, and don't stay too long. If you do, you'll start singing "Ol' Man River" with the best of them.

Franz Neumeier: Big wheels keep on turnin'
